How Frontlit Letters Actually Work
The setup for frontlit channel letters is pretty straightforward. You've got aluminum boxes shaped like letters with translucent fronts - usually acrylic or polycarbonate. LED strips inside point straight at the face. Turn them on, light shines through, letter glows. That's it. No complicated wall reflection stuff like backlit. Frontlit letters just light up bright and people see them. Simple.
Face material matters with frontlit channel letters though. Clear acrylic gives max brightness but you might see individual LED positions if they're not spaced right. Translucent or frosted faces diffuse the light better, create more even glow across the whole frontlit letter. But they cut brightness maybe 20-30%. Most businesses go somewhere in between with frontlit letters - semi-translucent that balances brightness and evenness.
LED spacing inside frontlit channel letters determines if the illumination looks good or cheap. Too few LEDs and you get bright spots mixed with dim spots. Looks terrible. Quality shops making frontlit letters know exactly how many LEDs per foot based on letter size and face material. Cheap places under-LED frontlit letters to save money, then you're stuck with uneven illumination.
